Painting Tutorial - Bandana Man

Posted December 15th, 2008 by admin

Here is a little tutorial on how i start a painting or concept. I usually use this process though i have dabbled in others.

1) Sketch what i want to paint and put it on a neutral background.

2) I then paint in my base color (the brown) and add any shadowed areas in. I tend to sample colors form photo reference from time to time or at least have one open to look at while i paint something like this.

3) Add my highlight color. I paint at the highest points starting with things like the forehead and nose tip and work back to a gradiant so it blends into the hard shadow edge. Step 2 and 3 are pretty quick and rough. You shouldnt need to spend too much time on this. but make sure that what you have with steps 2 and 3 are correct or the rest of your image will go fubar.

4) This is where i start refining with smaller details and adding the nitty gritty stuff. This usually takes me the longest.

5) Here i basically was adding some facial scars and nicks. I also cleaned up around the head. I generally paint skin first and then clean it up. If you wait until you do hair it becomes really hard to clean up after.

6) Here i blocked in the rough shapes and colors for the rest of the image. Something is bugging me about the body though. But I’ll fix it later.

7)Here i fixed his chin. Added facial hair.

8) I added some reddening here. This makes skin feel a bit warmer and more human. There are different approaches to this but here i just did some around the eyes, cheeks, chin and some other subtle spots.

9) texture texture texture. Here I added a bit of a texture overlay to the skin. I took some human face freckles etc and added it as an overlay layer in photoshop. I also did a bit of texture on the bandana. I still don’t like the body here.

10) Fleshing out more of the hair and sideburns

11)Fixed the dang body

12)Finished the details as much as i am going to for the tutorial. Things like the ears and earings etc. Painted in a bit of rim lighting to make the character stand out a bit more on the background. You get the idea. And wallah.

If you find this step by step breakdown tutorial useful let me know. Or adversely if you don’t let me know as well.

Cheers
Jamie
